How to Run Virtual Events That Members Actually Attend

March 18, 2026

The Attendance Problem

We've all seen it: 200 registrations, 40 attendees. Virtual event fatigue hit hard after 2020, and many associations are still struggling to get members to show up.

But here's the thing — virtual events aren't going away. They're too cost-effective and accessible to abandon. The key is making them worth attending.

Make It Interactive

The number one reason people skip virtual events is passive content. Nobody wants to watch a 60-minute lecture on Zoom.

  • Use polls and Q&A throughout, not just at the end
  • Break into small group discussions using breakout rooms
  • Include hands-on workshops where attendees create something

Keep It Short

90 minutes is the absolute maximum. 45-60 minutes is the sweet spot. If you have more content, split it into a series.

Send Strategic Reminders

One confirmation email isn't enough. Send reminders at: - 1 week before (with agenda highlights) - 1 day before (with connection details) - 15 minutes before (the critical nudge)

Record Everything

Always record and share replays. This reduces the pressure to attend live and actually increases registrations — people sign up knowing they can catch the replay if needed.
